General Landscape Uses: Outstanding accent or specimen palm for shaded courtyards, entryways, understory woodland plantings, residential shade gardens, and pool surrounds. Highly valued for container growing on covered patios, lanais, and interior landscapes.

Ecological Restoration Notes: Not typically utilized for ecological restoration outside its native habitat. Being strictly endemic to Lord Howe Island, its primary ecological value lies in ex-situ conservation and sustainable island seed harvesting to prevent native habitat degradation.

Description: A classic, slow-growing single-trunked feather palm with a slender, smooth green-to-grey stem clearly marked with ringed leaf scars. It bears a graceful crown of 10–20 deep green, elegantly arching pinnate fronds with droopy leaflets.

Dimensions: Height 25 – 40 ft.; Spread 10 – 15 ft.

Growth Rate: Very slow.

Native Range: Endemic exclusively to Lord Howe Island (a small volcanic island in the Tasman Sea, east of mainland Australia).

Native Habitats: Lowland forests, coastal scrub, and calcarenite dune deposits, typically growing under the canopy of larger rainforest trees from sea level to around 1,000 feet elevation.

Soils: Prefers rich, fertile, highly permeable soils with excellent drainage. Performs best in sandy loams, volcanic soils, or limestone-derived substrates with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Sensitive to heavy, poorly drained clay.

Nutritional Requirements: Moderate. Susceptible to potassium, magnesium, and manganese deficiencies in alkaline soils or poor media; requires a balanced palm fertilizer with micronutrients during active spring and summer growth.

Salt Water Tolerance: Low; cannot withstand soil salinity or saltwater inundation.

Salt Wind Tolerance: Moderate to High; tolerates coastal winds and ocean air breeze well, provided roots are in well-drained, non-saline soil.

Drought Tolerance: Moderate once fully established in ground; prefers consistent moisture but tolerates short dry periods far better than most tropical palms.

Light Requirements: Part sun to shade

Flower Color: Creamy white to pale yellow.

Flower Characteristics: Inflorescences emerge from below the leaf bases in branched, pendulous spikes (spadices) up to 3 feet long. Monoecious (male and female flowers on the same inflorescence).

Flowering Season: Late fall to winter

Fruit: Ovoid, dull red to reddish-brown drupes when mature, roughly 1.5 inches long, hanging in dense clusters. Takes up to 3 to 4 years to fully ripen from pollination.

Wildlife and Ecology: On Lord Howe Island, the flowers attract native insect pollinators, and mature fruits provide food for endemic fruit-eating birds and foraging fauna.

Horticultural Notes:  Grown from seed.

Comments: Widely regarded as one of the world’s finest indoor and shade palms due to its remarkable tolerance for low light, lower humidity, and general neglect compared to other palm species.
