General Landscape Uses: Excellent low-light groundcover or understory accent in tropical and subtropical landscapes (USDA Zones 10b–11). Commonly used in foundation plantings, shady borders, mass beds, container plantings, and heavily featured as an indoor interior-scape specimen plant.

Ecological Restoration Notes: Not applicable; Aglaonema ‘Silver Bay’ is a cultivated horticultural hybrid of non-native tropical origin and holds no ecological restoration value.

Description: Dense, multi-stemmed evergreen herbaceous perennial forming low, mounding clumps. Features broad, lanceolate to elliptic leaves with striking variegated foliage characterized by a solid light-silver center bordered by dark green feathering along the margins.

Dimensions: Height 2 – 3 ft.; Spread 2 – 3 ft.

Growth Rate: Moderate to fast (notably faster growing and more robust than older Aglaonema cultivars).

Native Range: Horticultural origin (cultivar developed in Florida by Dr. R.J. Henny); parent species are native to tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia (Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia).

Native Habitats: Forest understory layers, tropical moist lowland forests (parent species).

Soils: Rich, well-drained organic soils or standard indoor potting mix; intolerant of wet, poorly drained soils or standing water. Preferred pH is slightly acidic to neutral (5.5–6.5).

Nutritional Requirements: Moderate; benefits from light, balanced fertilizer applications during the active growing season (spring and summer).

Salt Water Tolerance: Low; intolerant of saline soil or salty water.

Salt Wind Tolerance: Low to none; highly susceptible to foliar damage from coastal aerosol salt drift.

Drought Tolerance: Moderate once established; tolerates short periods of dry soil, though consistent moisture yields optimal foliage appearance.

Light Requirements: Part sun to shade

Flower Color: Greenish-white to pale yellow spathe surrounding a cream-colored spadix.

Flower Characteristics: Arum-like inflorescence (spathe and spadix) typical of the Araceae family; inconspicuous, horticulturally insignificant, and often pruned off to direct energy toward leaf production.

Flowering Season: Late spring to summer (rarely blooms indoors)

Fruit: Small red or orange berries (rarely produced under typical landscape or indoor conditions).

Wildlife and Ecology: Low ecological value for wildlife; contains calcium oxalate crystals which make all plant parts toxic to dogs, cats, and humans if ingested.

Horticultural Notes: Grown from division and cuttings
